Blurb: When fifteen-year-old Jacob Lau is pulled from the crumpled remains of his mother’s car, no one can explain why he was driving or why the police can’t find his mother’s body. A beautiful and mysterious neighbor offers to use her unique abilities to help him find his mom.
But in exchange she requires Jacob to train as a Soulkeeper, a protector of human souls. He agrees to her demands, desperate for any clue to the mystery of his mother’s disappearance. But soon Jacob finds himself trapped in a web of half-truths, and questions her motives for helping him.
Review: It was an alright story but, I felt like it was just trying a bit too hard to be relatable and action packed. It was trying so hard to be good that it just felt forced.
There was way too much going on but I felt like it was written well enough that I didn’t want to put it down, it was just too long. It really didn’t need that many chapters and the way they were split made it feel just a bit rushed.
This book had the potential to be great, I really would have loved it if it wasn’t so long. If it had ended on a cliffhanger, and I know the perfect spot where it could have ended and picked it back up in the second book, that would have been so much better.
Will I read this again? I honestly can’t say. It was interesting and yet, all of the things mushed together was just a bit overwhelming.
Will I go on to the next book? Again, it’s hard to say. It’s a risk and I don’t know if I want to risk the disappointment, although it really could go either way.
Again, it was good enough to keep me reading but I couldn’t connect to the characters. Read at your own risk
Thank you for reading my review.
