Another Snow White telling but this time, when she’s older. I was very impressed by this book but I wanted to smack Snow a couple of times, tell her to stop wallowing in self-pity, she’s got a kingdom to run and a daughter to walk down the aisle. That’s the only problem I really had with the book.

I kind of ranted about that when I wrote about this in my book journal but I think I’ll spare you the details.

I loved that it stepped away from Disney and kept more to the Grimm side of things, instead of just going off on a new route. There is quite a bit of abuse in the flashbacks and most times, fairy tale stories tend to skimp most of that part, at least from what I remember and while I’m not a big fan of abuse, it made this tale dark.

I also really loved the realistic way the poison apple was introduced along with how she met the Prince. Every story I’ve read where the protagonist was recovering from a serious illness that kept them in bed, there wasn’t any mention of the more embarrassing aspects of the recovery and it felt risky but it was a risk that paid off.

Another re-telling of Snow White but it’s done in a new and interesting way. Now, while I’m not really sure that I feel like she actually learned anything, the ending was amazing.
