I felt like I was watching a movie and not a very good one at that, just one that kind of keeps your attention, even though it’s just a little boring. That’s how I felt about it. I felt like I was watching a movie, though I couldn’t see it in my head. Am I confusing you yet?

There were actually a lot of one star reviews about this book that started off with accusing the author of racism. I get it, the way she portrayed the Romas, or gypsies as they are referred in the book, was the classic thought many, many people had and I think still have. While I do think she could have gone another way with it, with the way the book was written, I think focusing on another villain or adding more into it would have been overwhelming.

On that note, the writing was very simple, almost like a slightly monotone person telling it. There’s a little excitement but otherwise, you just kind of tune it out.

The dialogue was a little confusing as well, it’s set in Ireland and I’ve read other books that have been set in Ireland or around that area and the author made sure that the readers knew that by how they spoke. Not in this one, only a few words are changed, maybe the first word they speak or the last but otherwise, in my mind, they sounded just like the Americans the story is based around. The only indication that they are in Ireland is when they say they’re in Ireland.

The POV changes weren’t handled very well either, it would just switch out of the blue and it would really throw me off.

If it weren’t for the cussing, which isn’t very much really, I would have thought I was reading a Christian novel because they turn to God a lot.

I would probably recommend this book as a filler for when you’re waiting for something or you just want to take a break from the massive TBR pile calling your name. Except for the small amount of cussing, it’s very clean for a book basically about the end of the world.
